Event Details:

Try a new outdoor adventure sport! Open to everyone, and designed as an intro to the exciting sport of orienteering. Ideal for all ages and abilities, with courses for runners and also families and children. Lots of help is available and no experience is necessary.
PARKING: at RAF High Wycombe, Naphill, at postcode HP14 4UE. Approaching from the south, pass the Gate Guardians of a Spitfire and a Hurricane, then take the 2nd left into the North end of the car park.
Typical attractive Chilterns beech woodland, steep in places, with generally runnable terrain and a good path network. The area contains some ponds and an array of large and small depressions.
Enter online, then head to the registration tent when you arrive, to pick up your timing chip and get some tips from our friendly Welcome Team. Tell them if it’s your first event, and they’ll explain what to do.
You can start a course any time from 10.15am to 11.45am.
Everyone must finish and report back to download by 1pm, even if you haven’t finished your course.
COURSES – arranged below in order of navigational difficulty. Remember – the course lengths are the straight line distances between the control points. You’ll go further, depending on your route choices!:
WHITE: 1.5km; 50m climb. Navigational difficulty 1/5. Really easy, all along simple paths. Suitable for youngsters who want to try a course on their own. We can arrange for a coach to shadow if parents wish.
YELLOW: 2.1km, 80m climb. Navigational difficulty: 2/5.
Still easy. Short and suitable for juniors or supervised newcomers. Controls on or near paths.
ORANGE: 3.5km, 130m climb. Navigational difficulty: 3/5.
Ideal course for families, adult newcomers, and juniors with some experience. Reasonably easy, with some navigation required. Probably around 5k actual distance, depending on your route choices!
RED: 4.4km, 180m climb (it’s hilly!). Navigational difficulty: 3/5.
Ideal for runners looking to try orienteering – this course is like an unmarked trail race. A fairly easy, longer course. Some navigation, but not too tricky! (same difficulty as Orange; just longer). Note you’ll probably run 6 to 7k actual distance with this course.
LIGHT GREEN: 3.7km, 120m climb. Navigational difficulty: 4/5.
Ideal for improvers or those who have been to a few events. More detailed navigation required through the woods, off paths.
GREEN: 4.4km, 180m climb. Navigational difficulty: 5/5.
For those with experience only; as difficult as we can make it! Complex navigation skills required. Expect a run of around 6k.
If you’re a runner getting into orienteering, the Red and Orange courses are ideal. For families, we recommend Orange, or Yellow if you want something shorter. For juniors, Yellow is a good choice. No courses cross any public roads. Expect some climb (i.e. hills!) on each course too.
Note that Bradenham Woods are a challenging area for orienteering – it was used for the British Middle Distance Championships just a few years ago. So do not overestimate your skills – it’s better to err on the side of caution, and come away ready for a bigger challenge next time, than to find yourself frustrated and lost.
You MUST pre-enter in advance as there will be no entry at the event, although you can enter online up to 11am on the day itself. Pre-entering reserves you a map. Just click on the Entries link and fill in your details.
You don’t have to be a member of an orienteering club to enter this event. On SI Entries (our entries system), just show your club name as IND (for Independent).
Small family or other groups are welcome, but please enter only the Yellow, Orange or Red courses. Enter as a senior. Change the name if you wish, for example to Jones Family.
